Brief History of the Department

The need for adequate and well-trained personnel to provide engineering solutions in medical and allied-related fields has been of global concern. Many countries have thus initiated efforts to promote the training of biomedical engineering personnel in their various institutions of learning. At the University of Ibadan, a preliminary effort in this direction was first made around 2006 when the attempt was made to promote joint research work between the academic staff at the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Technology. In the succeeding years, a draft curriculum for biomedical engineering training was developed. Fortunately, in 2013, an NIH grant that had the University of Ibadan and two other Universities as project sites for biomedical engineering promotion was secured. The grant helped train some personnel in biomedical engineering. The draft curriculum for postgraduate training was further developed and processed for the commencement of postgraduate training in biomedical engineering. In 2016, a master's degree programme in biomedical engineering was approved by the University; then as a unit in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. There have been three streams of admission into the programme since 2016/2017 session. The continuous quest for more biomedical engineers has necessitated the need to train personnel.
