15th Annual "Food Extrusion: Cereals, Protein and other Ingredients" Practical Course
Research Visit to Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA
A team from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) visited the Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan in November, 2012 for programmes accreditation exercise. The exercise was a huge success as all the programmes in the various Departments got full accreditation. In addition, the COREN team recommended a separate Department for the Wood Products programme which is currently in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.

The Faculty is currently assisting the University in the area of project evaluation and prosecution.
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited recently selected eight candidates: Olawale Opeoluwa Wonuola, Ekechukwu Gerald Kelechi; Department of Petroleum Engineering, Osho Samuel Adetunji, Otesile Abisola Olufunmilayo, Ajao Joshua Oluwafemi; Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ibe Obinna Marcel, Adewale Quadri Adedamola and Adetunji Temiloluwa Olawamiwa; Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering all of the Faculty of Technology to represent the University of Ibadan in the Shell 2013 Geosciences Sumer School. Two of the students took the second and third positions.
The Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc. has given a grant of N30 million for the establishment of the Flour Mills Food Research Centre (FMFRC) at the University of Ibadan.
To ensure that the FMFRC is a truly international centre of excellence in food research, top institutions in the United States, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world have been contacted for support. To this end, Dr. Peter Sopade, one of our alumni who obtained his Ph.D from the University of Reading, U.K. in extrusion processing and who is currently a leading expert in the field at the University of Queensland, Australia, has graciously agreed to offer his services free of charge to the FMFRC. Also a number of Academic staff in the Department of Food Technology have been selected for further training in extrusion cooking technology.
(i) The PTDF donated the following items to the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology:
Drilling of one bore hole
Construction of one surface water tank with capacity of 10,000 litres
Erection of one overhead Stanchion
Supply of two overhead tanks with combined capacity of 5,000 litres
Supply of two water pumps (One submersible pump and one surface pump)
Reticulation to the ICT Centre
(ii) Brigadier General O. A. Odidi, the Guest Lecturer for the 2011/2012 Fresh Graduate Engineers Induction ceremony donated a sum of N100,000.00 for the improvement of teaching and learning process in the Faculty of Technology.
(iii) Chairman and Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria limited, 21/22 Marina, Lagos donated some drilling laboratory equipment estimated at Fifteen Million Naira (N15 million) to the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology
(iv) Messrs Opeyemi Kusoro and Micheal Tu, North Western University, Chicago, USA recently donated prototype muscle stimulator and portable digital storage oscilloscope to the Department of Civil Engineering for a proposed Biomedical Engineering programme in the Department.
Professor A. O. Olorunnisola of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering delivered the Inaugural Lecture entitled "Harnessing the Forester's Harvest for Sustainable Development".
While attending the just concluded 22nd Engineering Assembly of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, which held between 20th and 21st of August, 2013 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, the Dean seized the opportunity to meet with some Alumni of the Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan.
At the meeting, the Dean thanked those in attendance for honouring the invitation. He expressed the readiness of the Faculty to reach out to every member of the Alumni wherever they might be and work in harmony with them in order to take the Faculty to an enviable height.
Those in attendance expressed appreciation to the Dean for his effort at contacting them. They pledged their commitment to the Faculty and promised to always contribute their quota to every effort to uplift the Faculty to a greater height.
(i) The Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan had MOU pact with the Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences of Finland. This would be the first contact the Finnish University had with an African University. Both parties agreed to collaborate in the areas of staff/students exchange programmes, collaborative research activities, capacity building, automotive hard and soft ware design and so forth.
(ii) There was another MOU pact with the PennState University, Pennsylvania in the United States. PennState is a comprehensive Research University that has the largest Engineering Schools in the United States. In an attempt to impact positively globally, the University commenced strategic partnerships with existing universities based on coming together to solve problems peculiar to the US and that of the partnering University's community.
(iii) There was also an MOU between U.I. and the Nigerian Air Force which was majorly in the area of Technology.
(iv) Again, the existing MOU between the University of Ibadan and Schlumberger Nigeria Limited was reviewed.
Inception Workshop on the Review of the National Energy Policy
Dr. S. O. Isehunwa of the Department of Petroleum Engineering attended the Inception Workshop on the Review of The National Energy Policy in Abuja from 10 - 11 September, 2013. The University's participation in the workshop was borne out of the fact that energy is very key to the attainment of national socio-economic development and poverty alleviation.
15th Annual Food Extrusion: Cereals, Protein and other Ingredients Practical Course
Dr. Olufunke O. Ezekiel of the Department of Food Technology participated in the 15th Annual "Food Extrusion: Cereals, Protein and Other Ingredients" Practical Course which took place from 18 - 23 August, 2013 at the Texas A & M University, USA under the Extrusion Technology Program.
She attended numerous theoretical sessions as well as practical demonstrations on food ingredients, textured protein applications, extrusion processing, cereal-grain applications and downstream handling.
The presence of the University at this Practical Course represents a concerted effort to prepare ground for the take off of the soon to be established Flour Mills Food Research Centre (FMFRC) at the University of Ibadan.
The workshop also availed the University of being part of a research team from Africa and Australia that submitted a proposal to Africa-Australia University Network (AAUN) in order to access a research grant on food security in the African continent.
Mr. Bamisebi Adetiloye, who has just completed his B.Sc. (Petroleum Engineering) from the University of Ibadan won the Best Student paper contest at the 37th Nigerian Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers held in 2013. This feat qualifies him to represent Nigeria and indeed the African Region at the International Student paper contest in New Orleans, USA.
With this victory, the Faculty of Technology has now won the prize for 5 consecutive years and a total of 7 times since inception in 2003.
Research Visit to Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA
Professor O. C. Aworh of the Department of Food Technology visited his Alma Mater, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York from 02-24 September, 2013. The visit was primarily aimed at exploring collaborative research with the University, especially in connection with the Flour Mills Food Research Centre to be established soon at the University of Ibadan. The visit also availed the distinguished professor the opportunity of attending the 2013 Alumni Homecoming of Cornell University.
Mrs Mojisola A. Bolarinwa has been granted approval to proceed on study leave of one year under the staff development programme to complete her Ph.D Research work at the Pennsylvania State University, USA from Nov. 2013 to Nov. 2014. Congratulations!
