The primary objective of this research is to source for appropriate local materials for the construction of grain silos under the warm humid climate in Nigeria. This has become necessary because of the problem of moisture condensation experienced with the metal silos which results in the spoilage of stored produce. This research commenced in 2003 with the first phase which was concluded in 2007. The first phase entailed the design of an appropriate sized silo that could meet the storage capacity requirement of a typical Nigerian small scale farmer, prototype construction and monitoring of temperatures within the silo. The results demonstrated a potential for reducing temperature fluctuations within the structure. The research in its second phase will entail monitoring the moisture and temperature profiles within the grains stored in the silo. This will provide useful data to develop a model for the prediction of grain quality in storage.
A number of agricultural activities generate noise at various levels some of which constitute discomfort to farm workers and livestock. This research is aimed at identifying noise generation locations in various agricultural activities, assessing by physical measurements of the level of such noise and where they are a threat, device methods of regulating such unwanted noise level. Presently, study locations are being identified while the relevant equipment are being assembled.
3. Greenhouse Engineering Hitherto, tropical climates were favourable enough for the production of crops under natural environment. At present, this is being threatened by climate change and it is increasingly becoming necessary to modify the environment where crops are produced. The main focus of this research is the establishment of the present status of use of crop production buildings in Nigeria, and the development of appropriate specifications that are applicable to the various climatic zones of the country. There is at present an on-going survey to establish the extent of use of crop production buildings in Nigeria.
4. Improvement of Structures for Crop Storage in Tropical Environment. The issue of postharvest losses is one area that has attracted the attention of many researchers but which has remained unresolved. The focus of this research is the evaluation of various crop storage structures and possible ways of modification to improve their efficiencies. Under this research, the current work is examining the efficiency of the local barn, a platform and an underground pit for the storage of yam tuber in Ibadan environment.
